Q: Any tips on finding my life verse? You know, the Bible verse that seems like it was just written for me and only me. -D.R.

Answered by Fr. Edward McIlmail, LC

A: It is good that you understand the Bible as something God uses to speak directly to you. The Bible is a means of God’s revelation which, after all, is meant for our salvation.

You might want to consider a few steps to find a life verse.

First, try spending a few minutes each day meditating on the day’s Gospel passage from Mass. To learn more about mediation, see here. To learn the day’s (or next day’s) Gospel passage, see here.

As you meditate little by little on the Gospels, use a small notebook to write down the inspirations that come to you. This will help you to dialogue with Jesus, which is a way of thinking of prayer. Eventually you might find passages that speak directly to you. Among them might be the life verse that helps you the most.

In the meantime, try reading the Old Testament passage in the first reading of each Mass. This will acquaint you more with the Old Testament. The responsorial psalm is also worth reading, since it includes passages from the rich Book of Psalms.

Keep in mind, too, that your life verse might change over the years. At various stages of life we might connect with other passages from Scripture. So it is natural to embrace different lines at different times.

I wish you well on your search. Be sure to cultivate your sacramental life too. God bless.
