A Dusty August: Weekly Message for 8-1-17

Dear Digital Pilgrim, pax Christi:

I always get the sense that we end up being a bit rushed at the end of the summer. So many loose ends need tying up as another school year (even for those of us no longer in school) gets going. It’s a time of planning, and a time of hope – hope for good things to come in the new season.

Amidst those many loose ends, the excitement of planning, and the surge of hope, it’s possible to lose sight of the Bigger Picture and the Deeper Truths. It’s possible to plan out our goals, activities, and commitments for the coming year while keeping the less urgent – and maybe, at first glance, less “exciting” things, like prayer and spiritual reading and confession – on the shelf. Watch out! We mustn’t let those bearers of grace gather dust! As Jesus himself reminded us, “Without me, you can do nothing” (John 15:15). And as the psalmist put it centuries earlier:b“Unless the Lord build the house, the workers labor in vain” (Psalm 127:1).

Here at RCSpirituality.org, we strive to make it as easy as possible for you to keep that in mind, and to keep first things – the everlasting things that give real meaning to all the other things – first. So as the summer winds down and we transition into another autumn, please take some time to think about how you will make room for the Lord in the coming months. A great way to start would be read (or listen to, or watch) any of our Retreat Guides, like “God Is Faithful: A Retreat Guide on Mary’s Assumption,” which coincides with the upcoming liturgical celebration.

And if by chance you, or someone you know, needs a little bit of a prayer-life jumpstart, you may want to check out my new book, A Quiet Place: How Daily Prayer Can Change Your Life, published by Matthew Kelly’s Beacon Press.

Keep polishing those Deeper Truths, so that they can shine their full light on your heart and your mind. And keep counting on our prayers, every day.

Thank you and God bless you!

In Him, Fr John
