“Ask a Priest: Is a Jack Chick Comic Book Correct About Mary?”

Want to rate this?

Q: I saw in a Jack Chick comic book that the Catholic Church teaches the Virgin Mary is the way, the truth and the life. Is this true? I know Chick exaggerates and lies a lot. – H.D.

Answered by Fr. Edward McIlmail, LC

A: The Church teaches that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, just as Our Lord himself taught in John 14:6. The Blessed Virgin Mary can help bring us closer to her Son, but that is another issue.

If you want to learn what the Church teaches, it would be better to see what the Church really says.

Two sources online are the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Compendium of the Catechism. Another fine resource is Catholic Answers (especially Jimmy Akin’s post).

Reading Chick comic books to find out the Church teaches is like reading Ku Klux Klan pamphlets to learn about the civil rights movement.
