A Mother’s Presence: Weekly Message for 05-14-2019

Dear Digital Pilgrims in Christ,

Each Sunday evening I look forward to making a phone call back home to speak with my mom.  It keeps me grounded, gives her a chance to share some motherly advice, helps me stay connected with family, and well…I get that much-needed assurance and reminder of how loved I am.  No matter how young or old we are, we all need to experience (even if we take it for granted at times!) the unconditional presence of a mother’s love.

After celebrating and giving thanks for our mothers this past weekend, yesterday’s feast of Our Lady of Fatima was a fitting honor to the presence of Our Blessed Mother and her desire to be with us along our Christian journey.

“My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God” – Our Lady to Venerable Sr. Lucia

Having gone to a Catholic boarding school throughout high school, memories of consolation during this time away from family include Mary, always keeping a rosary in my pocket or under my pillow to be reminded of her closeness.  She is my go-to. I was always turning to Mary, my mother, knowing her to be with me in times of joy and sorrow.

Therefore, in a special way, the Church encourages us to set aside the entire month of May to honor Mary, the Mother of God. Not just a day in May but the entire month – to be attentive and assured of her motherly presence.

The ways Mary can be honored in May are as varied as the people who honor her. So, what invitation is she making for how she wants you to spend time with her this month? What is she placing on your heart to do each day in giving her an extra moment to be with her?  Praying the rosary before the Blessed Sacrament, placing flowers before an image or statute, visiting a shrine or making a Mary garden are all ways she simply wants us to know she is near and that she loves us!

Through our Retreat Guides on themes related to Mary, Our Mother, we pray that you draw closer to Our Blessed Mother during this month of May.

I want to thank all of you who are continuing to support us here at RCSpirituality with your prayers, suggestions, and donations. Thank you for helping to spread the Good News throughout the growing, digital continent.

In Christ,

Lucy Honner
