Praising the Greatness of the Lord: Weekly Message for 05-09-2023

Dear Friends,

I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth (Psalm 34:1).

All artists desire praise for their creation. This isn’t vanity, but rather an awareness that praise brings new depths of understanding to the one who praises. We cannot praise unless we have loved; we cannot love unless we have recognized.

The Blessed Virgin Mary, whose month we celebrate, demonstrates God’s desire to be praised for the great things he has done for us. When we praise God, our hearts and his beat in the harmony of joyful recognition: “My spirit rejoices in God my savior” (Luke 1:47).

For what should we praise God? Quite literally, for everything. And yet, here I want to underscore a dimension of praise perhaps overlooked. How often do we praise the Lord for the great things he has done, and is doing, in us? The mightiest works of grace, at least in this world, are silent; the greatest wonders of God take place in the human heart.

In this month of May, therefore, perhaps the Lord invites us to praise him particularly for his work in us. Perhaps, with the Blessed Virgin Mary, we might praise God’s action in our hearts—the action we’re aware of, and the action known only to him.

“The Almighty has done great things in me, and holy is his name” (Luke 1:49)!

In Christ,

Fr. John Pietropaoli, LC

  1. How true! I cannot take credit for all the good that I do, or even the good that I have in me, it is Christ alone. May my life be a song of praise to the Lord, for all that he is, and all that he is in me. Thank you so much Father John.
