Stronger Than Politics: Weekly Message for 06-04-2024

Dear Friends in Christ,

The Church in its liturgy focuses on two key aspects of Jesus this week.

This past Sunday we celebrated Corpus Christi, a solemnity dedicated to honoring the Body and Blood of Our Lord in the Eucharist.

This coming Friday we celebrate another solemnity, that of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The idea here is to draw attention to the love of Jesus, symbolized in his heart.

The Church celebrated one of the manifestations of Jesus’ love a few weeks ago, on Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit whom he promised to send did descend in a dramatic way on Mary, the apostles and other disciples.

The Spirit is himself is a profound expression of God’s love. We could say that the Third Person of the Holy Trinity is the love between the Father and the Son.

It’s this same Spirit who inspires us day by day, nudging us to do good and to avoid evil.

At the deepest level, our opening to the Spirit enables us to love in all directions, to friend and foe alike.

This mission to love is worth remembering this year as political campaigns heat up and threaten to shake, rattle and roil whole nations.

Being children of the same heavenly Father, we ideally should see one another as brothers and sisters, not as gladiators slugging it out in the arena of politics.

To help focus on the love of God more (and less on the 24/7 news cycle) it might be worth praying along with our retreat guide The Mystery of Eternal Love: A Retreat Guide on the Blessed Trinity

It can help us remember that love is stronger (and much more unifying) than politics.

In Christ,

Father Edward McIlmail, LC
