We have the mind of Christ: Weekly Message for 06-11-2024

Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind (Romans 12:2).
We have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16).

Dear Friends,

Truth, Pope Benedict XVI observed, is a relationship — the correspondence of our minds with reality. And like any other relationship, the search for truth through study is both demanding and exhilarating.

Interestingly, our word “study” comes from the Latin studere, which meant both “to be eager for” and “to strive after.” Both effort and exhilaration are implied. And there’s a particular nuance of moving towards a goal. That goal, of course, is truth.

Aside from practical career considerations, we study because human beings are made for truth. Expounding Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas writes that we are open to all reality (“in some sense all things”). We are created to be in relationship with all good things, with all times and places and people. Study enables us to do precisely that.

For a Catholic, study is not optional. We’ve a responsibility to discover truth, to enter ever more deeply into a relationship with reality. An almost unfathomably rich tradition of writers and thinkers awaits our engagement. From Augustine to Anselm to Aquinas to Catherine of Siena to Teresa of Avila to John Henry Newman to Therese of Lisieux to Ratzinger — a better array of teachers is inconceivable.

And this responsibility is also delightful. As we discover truth, we glimpse the face of God and grow in the glorious freedom of his sons and daughters: “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:32).

Perhaps this is the moment for each of us to recommit. Is there a saint or author whose work interests me? Is there a topic or theme of particular relevance for me right now? Let’s find it.

And let’s embark on the continual quest for truth.

God bless you,
