Not sure how to use this retreat guide?

Advent is a journey within a journey. The journey of the Three Wise Men who followed a star to Bethlehem, a journey which the entire Church celebrates on the Solemnity of Epiphany as the culmination of the liturgical seasons of Advent and Christmas, is like a living parable.

The core of the parable is the Magi’s journey: The Magi undertook a journey to encounter God. And isn’t that what every Christian life is, in its essence, a journey to the definitive encounter with God?

In this Retreat Guide, you will follow along with the Magi as they follow their Star, learning how to face and overcome the difficulties that they had to face and overcome, and finding new ways to place your treasures at the feet of the Lord.

  2. MUCH FOOD FOR THOUGHT FATHER JOHN THANK YOU THE TUG IN MY HEART IS NOT TO WASTE MY GIFTS LIKE THE SERVANT WHO BURIED HIS TALENT RATHER TO STEP OUT IN MY LOVE FOR THE LORD TO SERVE HIM IN WHATEVER WAY HE HAS CALLED ME. GREAT TO RECEIVE THE ASSURANCE FROM THIS RETREAT THAT I CAN DO EXACTLY THAT FOR HIS GLORY AND HONOUR AS I REMAIN OPENED TO HIS GRACES

  3. Wow! I,too want to thank you Fr John. I praise God for you; that you accepted the grace to serve Him and those of us who have grown so much closer and obedient to Jesus reading and listening to you speak His truths into our lives.
I serve as a coordinator of a WWP chapter on the Chesapeake Bay. This is a marvelous retreat and I will share as much of it as is possible with my leadership team, as well as, family and friends!.
Again, thank you for the scholarship and inspiration I found here today. In Christ, Martha

  4. I never thought of this parable in light that Jesus was shortly to undergo his passion and leave his new found church. When I was listening to you Fr. John, it overcame me that what a marvelous and hidden way of Jesus to tell his disciples to increase his flock/church. We are given the knowledge of Jesus’s kingdom, we have children/friends/family; do we multiple and double his followers? Or do we just keep the beautiful gift of our faith to ourselves, no evangelization. For it is safe and non confronting to keep Jesus safe and buried inside our homes, sometimes not even challenging our Godchildren whom we made a commitment to. Yes to share our talents, but also to evangelize our faith and multiple his flock. Don’t keep it to yourself – spread the faith (Jesus’s love) everywhere!

  5. Thank you for using your talents as a wonderful teacher to open God’s teachings to us in scripture. Your use of these retreat guides, the Advent daily reflections and in “The Better Part” are all so powerful in giving me a better understanding and a fresh way to encounter God and grow in my love for Him. May God continue to richly bless you in this ministry!

  6. What an amazing gift these retreats are! Thank you for the time and energy it takes to write something that speaks clearly and vividly, teaches, inspires, and focuses. I have always struggled with the Parable of the Talents – I feel like the servant who buried the treasure only knew fear of the King; he acted out of that limited knowledge and was punished for his ignorance and that is very sad to me. I have a better understanding of the teaching now and it is my goal to help people know of God’s great love. Also, I now have such an expanded understanding and wonder at the story of the Magi. I pray that God will present an opportunity for me to share a conversation with somebody about this great event!

  7. This retreat is so meaningful! Thank you so much for offering this Retreat online. May I know how I can help even a little to your work in building up God’s Kingsom. God bless you all!

  8. Thank you for this Father. The explanation of this parable was very helpful. For some reason I have never looked at it this parable in this light. Even though I have read many, many times.
Thank you and God bless this ministry
